The Florists

There comes a time in ones life I guess when you begin to question what you do, whether it’s the right thing, are you going the right direction. How are you supposed to know what direction you are going anyways? It’s not like theres a rule book or a map to this thing called life is there. You just move by gut feeling I suppose. Anyways that is a story for another day. Today or this morning rather I want to share with you the story of a group of awesome florists right where I live. I would normally see them on the way home or leaving home since they are set up on the roadside. On one sunny afternoon, I decided I am going to find out who these people are and see if I could get some pictures. The other day I had been watching Steve McCurry’s One Minute Masterclass and he was sharing tips of how to approach people in street photography. I have always found his work fascinating and truly challenging so I thought to myself why not give it a go. So there I was on the street by my house walking towards these florists really not having a clue as to what I was going to say. I just thought to myself I’m just gonna go there, say hello, by some flowers and leave. By the time I got there, I said hello and they seemed really friendly so we quickly engaged in conversation and started talking. I bought the flowers and left shortly after. I didn’t want to ‘spoil’ the moment by telling them who I really was and shoving a lens in their face. I took McCurry’s advice and left. About a week after I returned and the florists Beden and Timothy welcomed me and were happy to see me. Probably because I came to buy flowers again. (haha yeah this ended up being quite an expensive experiment!) However on this particular visit I made my intentions clear and asked them If I could take their pictures. Lo and Behold, they really welcomed the idea! I was amazed, as a photographer sometimes it’s really hard to take pictures of total strangers but yeah I was really amazed. This is the first time I’ve done any photography like this and hopefully it won’t be the last. But what do you guys think, any seasoned street photographers out there? Would be glad to hear from you and get your 2 cents 😀

  1. Well, i’m not a professional photographer but i’d say these are pretty interesting! Who doesn’t like a good photo with a story behind it?

Images of raw, african, working class men selling colourful flower arrangements by the roadside, is a little…curious, LoL, it almost gives them a whimsical charm! Without the flowers, or or if they were women i suppose they would be just another ordinary sight on the road. Do you think they ever question what they do, or is it more simply a question of surviving than job satisfaction?

    • Yeah it’s funny you should say that because I was talking to the father of one of the younger guys and he’s been in the business for over 20 years. To answer your question though I guess its to survive and to make a living. For me it was just nice to meet people so genuine and so kind…
